The Legacy Lives On: Understanding Classical and Traditional Pilates

When Joseph Pilates passed away in 1967, he left behind not just a set of exercises, but a revolutionary method that would go on to transform countless lives. But his legacy didn't end there. Pilates had disciples—dedicated individuals who carried forward his teachings, each leaving their own unique imprint on the Pilates world. At the forefront of this lineage stands Romana Kryzanowska. Born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1923, Kryzanowska was one of Pilates' most devoted students. Her disciplined approach earned her the moniker "guardian of the method." After Pilates' passing, Kryzanowska continued to champion his work, co-founding the Pilates Studio in New York City and training scores of instructors. Her dedication earned her the title of "classical Pilates," signifying her commitment to preserving the traditional teachings of Joseph Pilates.
