Caged Lion: The Human Story Behind Joseph Pilates’s Legacy

We often speak about preserving the Pilates method. But what, exactly, are we trying to preserve?

John Howard Steel’s Caged Lion: Joseph Pilates and His Legacy offers a way to think about that question. Steel was a student and friend of Joseph Pilates. His book blends biography, personal memory, and the story of how Contrology grew from a small New York studio into a method practised around the world.

John Howard Steel, Caged Lion

What makes the book compelling is its view of Joseph as a person. Steel describes a teacher with a powerful belief in his work, an unconventional way of sharing it, and a difficult path toward wider recognition. We meet the man behind the apparatus and the exercises—someone whose vision was much larger than a workout.

The book also reminds us that a legacy never belongs to one person alone. After Joseph’s death, the future of his work depended on people who continued to practise, teach, and care for it. Steel’s account follows that uncertain journey as well as his own connection to Joseph and Clara Pilates.

That is the part I keep returning to as an educator.

Ole Eugenio, Pilates

A teacher can pass on the order of exercises. But passing on a method asks more of us. It asks us to understand why an exercise is there, what skill it develops, and how it connects to the rest of the system. It asks us to observe the body in front of us and make thoughtful decisions, rather than teach from memory alone.

At Smart Movement International, I want teachers to study the history with the same curiosity they bring to movement. Knowing where the work came from can deepen how we practise it today. Steel’s memories give us one valuable perspective; they also invite us to keep asking questions and learning from other voices who carried the method forward.

Ole Eugenio, Pilates

To honour a legacy is to keep it alive through thoughtful teaching. That means respecting the work Joseph Pilates began while taking responsibility for what each student receives from us now.

The exercises are what we inherit. Understanding is what we pass on.
